Avanzando
In October 2021, Santa Rosa Junior College was selected to receive a Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) grant for the District’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and Health Sciences programs. From this funding, the Avanzando Initiative ("to advance forward") was born, merging the MESA and HOPE programs. The goals of the Avanzando Initiative are to improve the academic success and completion rates among Latinx students and increase the number of Latinx and other low-income students attaining STEM and Health Science certificates, degrees, and transfer. The MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement) Community College Program and the HOPE (Health Occupation Preparation and Education) Program both have a long history of helping students advance towards their educational and career goals. Recognizing the students in traditional STEM and Health Science fields take nearly the same courses before determining a career path, the Avanzando Initiative intends to provide multiple resources and supports that are known to be impactful for student success.
